Resolved: Get fit for the summer
By Nanci Hellmich, USA TODAY
Everyone thinks of January as the biggest dieting month, as people face the New Year with fistfuls of resolve and carrot sticks.

But as it turns out, even more people try to lose weight in March, when warming temperatures herald the not-too-distant approach of another beach season.

Last year, about 28% of people surveyed in the last week of January said they were on a diet, compared with about 30% at the end of March, according to the NPD Group, a leading market research firm. "The peak of dieting is in March, because June is just around the corner, and that's when you're going to be wearing fewer clothes," says Harry Balzer, an NPD vice president.

So now is the ideal time for the return of USA TODAY's Weight-Loss Challenge, which ran all last summer and was revisited in January. We'll offer practical tips for weight loss, introduce dieters who are just starting their programs and catch up with people who have been trying to trim down since last summer.

They see the light

Nutritionists believe the dieters who are most successful have a "light bulb" moment when something clicks, and they decide they don't want to live with their extra weight any longer. Their doctors might have told them they have to lose weight so they don't develop diabetes or heart disease. Or they may be motivated by cosmetic reasons such as looking good for a class reunion or landmark birthday.

"The most successful people I've worked with have had it with being overweight, and they want to be in control of their health," says registered dietitian Beth Casey Gold, clinical coordinator of the University of Vermont Behavioral Weight Management Program, Read More....

Antioxidants & Cataracts

There are two types of Cataracts

1. The Age-Related (or Senile) Cataracts and

2. The Diabetic and Galactose-induced Cataracts (sugar cataracts).

It is interesting to note that:

Cataracts are so common among older people that the odds are, if you live long enough, you will develop them.

Babies can be born with Cataracts and these are called Congenital Cataracts.

The main cause of Cataract damage is due to the Free Radical.

In the medical finding Cataract is dependant on adequate levels and activities of Glutathione, Superoxide Dimutase, Catalase, Selenium, and Vitamin E and C. These compounds all aid in preventing free radical damage to the lens of the eye.

The process of reducing of Free Radical is by Detoxin & then supplement with AntiOxidants Like Alphaha-Lipoic Acid; Carotenoids & Glutathione; Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Co-Enzyme Q10....

Always must remember that the Eyes root organ is control by the

Liver - Abstract Wood

Kidney - Abstract Water

The illness of the roots must be fix 1st. The Herbs that "I-Medicine Sutra" used to heal Eye disease is

Chrysanthemum,

Lycium Fruit,

Lycium Leaf's,

Jie Min Tze..

It further explained that if the Liver "Fire" it not put off then it would affect on vision.

Eyes is very important in our life. Need to take good care of it for its wellness. Not to lost the eyes wellness & visions.

Antioxidants and Cataracts

ALPHA-Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a vitamin-like antioxidant that is soluble in both fat and water. It is because of its unique structure that Lipoic acid is allowed into both the fatty and watery portions of the cell. This greatly enhances its ability to trap free radicals wherever they may be.

ALA is the only Antioxidant that can recycle all the network antioxidants: vitamin E, Co-Enzyme Q10, Glutathione, and vitamin C. Therefore, Lipoic acid is the antioxidant’s antioxidant and it offers powerful protection against conditions such as Cataracts, Diabetic retinopathy and neuropathy.

A Cataract is a cloudy or opaque covering that grows over the lens of the eye and impairs vision. This is caused by Free Radical damage to some of the Sulphur-containing proteins in the lens. These delicate protein fibres form white spots when they are damaged; much like the Sulphur-rich proteins of eggs when they are fried or boiled. The damaged lens cannot transmit light effectively to the retina.

Cataracts are so common among older people that the odds are, if you live long enough, you will develop them. Babies can be born with cataracts and these are called congenital cataracts.

Blurred, dimmed, or double vision and a frequent need for new eyeglass prescriptions usually raise suspicion of Cataracts. The individual may also be aware of seeing a scattering of light beams in the glare from a spotlight, headlights, or the sun.

Many factors may cause or contribute to the progression of Cataracts, including Ocular diseases, Injury or Surgery, Systemic diseases (for example diabetes mellitus), toxins, ultraviolet or radiation exposure, and hereditary disease.

There are two types of cataracts; the age-related (or senile) Cataracts and the diabetic and Galactose-induced Cataracts (sugar cataracts).

In Cataract formation, the normal protective mechanisms are unable to prevent Free Radical damage. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that can react with and destroy protein in the lens. The lens, like many other tissues of the body, is dependant on adequate levels and activities of Glutathione, Superoxide Dimutase, Catalase, Selenium, and Vitamin E and C. These compounds all aid in preventing free radical damage to the lens of the eye.

Glutathione (GSH) is found practically in every cell and is an important weapon in the battle against Free Radicals. It is composed of 3 Amino Acids and is found at very high concentrations in the lens.

GSH plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy lens and has been postulated as a key network Antioxidant that is instrumental in getting rid of Toxins from the body. Glutathione also maintains reduced sulphur bonds within the lens proteins and acts as a Co-Enzyme of various Enzyme systems.

When we reach the age of 40, the production of glutathione begins to decline; it can drop almost 20% by the time we are 60. GSH levels are diminished in virtually all forms of Cataracts.

Alpha-lipoic acid is unique in that it is the only Antioxidant that can significantly boost the levels of glutathione in the cells. Since lipoic acid can recycle glutathione, it is a good thing. This is because, when taken orally, Glutathione is not well absorbed by the body and most of it goes to waste. Therefore, when you take lipoic acid, you are not only getting all the benefits of lipoic acid, but you are also getting an additional dose of Glutathione.

The ability to restore itself (and other Antioxidants) is one of the reasons that Alpha-Lipoic acid is so important in maintaining our Antioxidant advantage, which we need in order to defeat the forces that can age us prematurely and rob us of our health.

The impact of vitamin A supplementation on mortality inequalities among children in Nepal -- Bishai et al. 20 (1): 60 -- Health Policy and Planning

This report finding sumed up is that:

Without vitamin A, girls in rural Nepal experience 26.1 deaths per 1000, which is 8.3 deaths more than the comparison population of boys.

With vitamin A the mortality disadvantage of girls is nearly completely attenuated, at only 1.41 additional deaths per 1000 relative to boys.

Vitamin A supplementation also narrowed mortality differentials among Hindu castes, but did not lower the concentration of mortality across quintiles of asset ownership.

The vitamin A-related attenuation in mortality disadvantage from gender and caste is statistically significant.

It really explained the importance of having Vitamine A supplements for your Wellness & Longevity.

I was not aware of the importance of Nutrition Supplement until I come to America. But there are thousnads of brand of these Supplements on the market.Do you really know what are you eating?? & How effective they are.

Anyway, Pharmanex Bio-Photonic Scanner
would answer to your concern; whether your money invested in Nutrition Supplements is actually flash out to the drain.

Objective: This paper examines gender, caste and economic differentials in child mortality in the context of a cluster-randomized trial of vitamin A distribution, in order to determine whether or not the intervention narrowed these differentials.

Design: The study involved secondary analysis of data from a placebo-controlled randomized field trial of vitamin A supplements. The study took place between 1989–1991 in rural Sarlahi District of Nepal, with 30 059 children age 6 to 60 months. The main outcome measures were differences in mortality between boys and girls, between highest Hindu castes and others, and between the poorest quintile and the four other quintiles.

Results: Without vitamin A, girls in rural Nepal experience 26.1 deaths per 1000, which is 8.3 deaths more than the comparison population of boys.

Conclusions: We conclude that universal supplementation with vitamin A narrowed differentials in child death across gender and caste in rural Nepal. Assuring high-coverage vitamin A distribution throughout Nepal could help reduce inequalities in child survival in this population.

Skin Cancer & Sun Tan

Being Born in South East Asia, the Sun & humility is really something that I don't enjoy.

When I was living in Swansea in Wales. During the summer, I always spend an hour walking at the beach after Lunch. I experience & understand the British people like the natural "Sun Tan" at the beach or at the park.

After returning to Asia. I start to research into the cause of Skin Cancer for those who have liking of "Sun Tan" & Skin Cancer.

I am glad that more & more medical report have the finding proving that the Skin Cancer is to do with the Love of Sun Tan .

The following articles would gives you some insight of Skin Cancer.

Skin Cancer Facts

1. More than a million people will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year.

2. More than half of all new cancers are skin cancers.

3. One in 5 Americans will get skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.

4. One person dies every hour from skin cancer, primarily melanoma.

5. Nationally, there are more new cases of skin cancer each year than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung, and colon.

6. The incidence of melanoma is increasing rapidly in women under the age of 40. It is now the most common cancer in young women aged 25-29, and second only to breast cancer in women aged 30-34.

7. Melanoma kills more young women than any other cancer.

8. In national skin cancer screenings, the majority of screenees found to have melanoma – 44% -- are white men over age 50.

9. The two groups with the highest skin cancer incidence in national screenings are men over age 50 with a changing mole or fair skin, and men under age 50 with a changing mole or fair skin.

10. The incidence of eye melanomas among white males increased 295 percent between 1973 and 1999.

11. More than 90 percent of all skin cancers are caused by sun exposure, yet fewer than 33 percent of adults, adolescents, and children routinely use sun protection.

12. Melanoma accounts for 3⁄4 of all deaths from skin cancer, which adds up to over 7900 American lives each year.

13. The risk of developing melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, has more than doubled in the past decade.

14. One in four persons who develop skin cancer is under the age of 40.

15. Almost 37 percent of white female adolescents and over 11 percent of white male adolescents between 13 and 19 years of age in the U.S. have used tanning booths.

16. The effects of photoaging (skin aging caused by the sun) can be seen as early as in one’s 20’s.

17. While melanoma is uncommon in African-Americans, Latinos, and Asians, it is most deadly for these populations.

18. Putting proven cancer prevention and early detection techniques into action could eliminate at least 100,000 cancer cases and 60,000 cancer deaths in the U.S. each year.

Protein Key to Skin Cancer Spread Found

According to "I-Medicine Sutra" any form cancer is due to the "Dampness" & the imbalance of "Chi" the "Poison" permuntations.

The Root of Skin & Hair is the Lung. Therefore, people that have Skin Cancer is have to observe the Lung conditions. To heal the Skin illness, it is advised to examine the Lung 1st.

The Skin is mainly consist of Collagen & Elastin. The aging of collagen & Elastin would cause the aging of Skin.

Hence, what the following report finding did reconfirmed the research report of the "I-Medicine Sutra" with the mordern science.

Remember to have a beautiful & healthy Skin. You need to take care of your Lung 1st.

Protein Key to Skin Cancer Spread Found
Researchers say it's a possible target for treatment

By Ed Edelson HealthDay Reporter

THURSDAY, March 17 (HealthDay News) -- A study of children with a particularly nasty skin disease has identified a protein that enables the deadly spread of a common skin cancer.

The protein is collagen VII, one of a family of molecules that play an essential role in skin culture, says a report in the March 18 issue of Science by researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Collagen VII normally keeps the outer layer of the skin anchored to the inner layer.

The researchers studied 12 children with a rare blistering skin condition called recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, which affects the bottom layer of the skin and causes not only persistent blistering, but also webbing of the fingers and toes that can require surgery.

About two-thirds of the children with the condition develop squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common skin cancer, with more than 200,000 new cases in the United States each year.

Taking tissue samples from the 12 children, Dr. Paul Khavari, a professor of dermatology at Stanford, and Dr. Susana Ortiz-Urda, a postdoctoral scholar, found that samples from four of them did not become cancerous even when molecular cancer-causing mechanisms were activated. Samples from the other eight children did turn cancerous.

Molecular studies showed that the four children whose samples did not become cancerous had a genetic mutation that caused them to have no collagen VII at all. Samples from the other children, with different mutations that produced a fragment of collagen VII, did develop into squamous cell carcinoma.

That work was done in lab tissues. The Stanford researchers then checked out the finding by transplanting human skin cancer cells into mice. Treating the mice with an antibody that blocked collagen VII prevented the cancer cells from spreading.

At least a fragment of collagen VII is required for skin cancer cells to break free and start their potentially deadly spread, Khavari said. "When we blocked this sequence, we also blocked the cancer from spreading," he added.

Two possible explanations of the effect were offered by Dr. Ervin H. Epstein Jr., a professor of dermatology at the University of California at San Francisco, and co-author of an accompanying commentary.

"One is that in order to invade surrounding tissue, cancer cells must be able to hold on," he said. "Maybe they can't hold on tightly enough. But cancer cells respond to their external environment. Without collagen VII, they could be deaf to the surrounding signals that should be given to the cells."

Epstein said he sees a "glimmer" of possible medical uses of the finding, "but whether there are immediate possibilities, I don't know."

Targeting the molecule with antibodies that would counteract its activity or prevent cancer cells from making it might help prevent their spread, "but if the skin fell off, that would not be so good," Epstein said.

Any medical application might be a "Pyrrhic victory," in which more is lost than gained, Epstein wrote, "perhaps winning the battle against squamous cell carcinoma but losing the battle against the disfiguring skin defects of dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa."

Apples reduce breast cancer risk

"An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away."

As the saying above apple have many vitamin s & minerals & amino acids that good for our health.

This report certainly give good encouragement for ladies.

Apples reduce breast cancer risk

Researchers from Cornell University have found supporting evidence for the adage "an apple a day keeps the doctor away." They found breast tumour incidence fell 17%, 39% and 44% in rats fed the human equivalent of one, three or six apples a day respectively over 24 weeks. Professor David Jacobs, of the University of Minnesota, said there was "extensive evidence that extremely important health aspects of food work through the combination of substances that make up that food, a concept we call food synergy. Risk of many chronic diseases in modern life appears to be reduced by whole foods but not by isolated large doses of selected food compounds. The current work on apples and breast tumours in rats is a perfect example of this principle."

Taking vitamin E 'could raise risk of heart failure'

The "I-Medicine Sutra" have said that any Herbs would have 30% of poisons characteristics.

With this report it further confirm the old saying that everything should not be over the limit. & also cannot be not be insufficient.

When in doubts please consult your health specialist.

Taking vitamin E 'could raise risk of heart failure'
By Celia Hall, Medical Editor (Filed: 16/03/2005)

Taking vitamin E to cut the risks of heart disease or cancer has no effect and might even increase the chance of heart failure, doctors said yesterday.

Researchers in Canada strongly advise against people with existing heart disease or diabetes taking vitamin E supplements.

Their study in the Journal of the American Medical Association followed patients for almost seven years and is one of the longest trials of vitamin E supplement use.

The trial, by Dr Eva Lonn of Ontario's Population Health Research Institute and McMaster University and her colleagues, involved more than 700 patients aged at least 55. They all had vascular disease or diabetes already.

Those studied received either a high dose of vitamin E or a placebo. Dr Lonn said in the journal: "Daily administration of vitamin E had no clear impact on fatal and non-fatal cancers, major cardiovascular events or deaths.

"We observed an increase in the risk of heart failure, which is of concern. Although this adverse effect of vitamin E was unexpected and cannot be confirmed at this time by other trials, our data are internally consistent."

The researchers recommend testing this finding by studying all existing trials.

"With its lack of efficacy, the potential for harm suggested by our findings strongly supports the view that vitamin E supplements should not be used by patients with vascular disease or diabetes," Dr Lonn warned.

"Our study also has wider implications. There is a tendency to accept 'natural products' [vitamins] as being safe, even if they have not been proven to be effective.

"Our findings emphasise the need to thoroughly evaluate all vitamins, natural products and complementary medicines before they are widely used for presumed health benefits."

Pamela Mason, a Health Supplements Information Service adviser, said that people with health conditions should consult doctors before taking supplements.

But she commented: "This study featured high vitamin E doses, well above the recommended daily allowance, in older patients with vascular disease or diabetes.

"There is no evidence to suggest that moderate doses of vitamin E taken by healthy adults pose any risks at all."

Vital Signs: Symptoms: What Blood Counts Can Tell

Women with the highest counts had twice the risk of dying from heart disease as women with the lowest counts did!!!!!

This is a very interesting study. Also, the researchers noted, that chronic inflammation may play a role in the thickening and hardening of the arteries, or atherosclerosis.

So for the Wellness, A healthy heart is very important. My recommendations is take:

Less Meat

Not Red Meat

Less Oil

No Deep Fried Food

Less Salt

Less Sugar

Take 7 to 9 Portions of Fruits & Vege

Meditations

Walk half an hour a day.

Take Carotene Supplements.

Symptoms: What Blood Counts Can Tell
By ERIC NAGOURNEY

A simple look at white blood cell counts in women ages 50 to 79 may help doctors tell if the women are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease, even if they have no symptoms, researchers said yesterday.

Writing in Archives of Internal Medicine, the researchers said that in postmenopausal women, an elevated white blood cell count, a sign of inflammation, appeared to be linked with greater incidence of coronary heart disease death and heart attacks.

The study was led by Dr. Karen L. Margolis of the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

The study is based on a review of more than 72,000 women around the country over a six-year period. The researchers correlated the women's white blood cell counts, taken at the beginning of the study, with the incidence in later years of cardiovascular disease.

The study found that women with the highest counts had twice the risk of dying from heart disease as women with the lowest counts did. They also had a 40 percent higher risk of heart attack and a 46 percent higher risk for stroke.

There is a growing body of evidence, the researchers noted, that chronic inflammation may play a role in the thickening and hardening of the arteries, or atherosclerosis.

What is not clear, the study said, is whether the higher white blood cell counts contribute to the problem or just signal it.

More Ventilation May Reduce In-Flight Disease Risk

This is a valid statement. In 1994-1999, each year I flawn about 345,000 Air miles per year.

I found that if the Plane air is fresh & temperature is right, when I touch down , I have less chances of falling sick.

However, if the plane air circulation is no good, whenever I touch down, I would need to go to the doctor.

Therefore, Shuttle Bug's need to beware of these. The other thing is that the Airline's need to ensured that the inflight air quality need to be monitored constantly.

More Ventilation May Reduce In-Flight Disease Risk
Reuters Mar. 11, 2005 - By Charnicia E. Huggins

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The risk of catching an infectious illness on commercial aircraft may be reduced if the cabin air is refreshed more frequently, a new report suggests.

"Mathematical modeling of existing epidemiological information suggests that increasing the ventilation rate within the cabin can reduce the risk of infection," Dr. Mark Gendreau, of the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Massachusetts told Reuters Health.

In the report, published in this week's issue of the Lancet medical journal, Gendreau and co-author Alexandra Mangili discuss the risk of infectious disease and methods of disease transmission during commercial air travel.

Each year, more than 1 billion men and women travel by air, and 50 million of them travel to developing nations. From the moment these passengers are strapped into their seats and an aircraft begins its ascent, they are exposed to dry humidity, close proximity to strangers and a number of other health risks.

Yet, studies show that the risk of diseases being transmitted from one passenger to another is greatly reduced by ventilation systems within the cabin, according to Gendreau and Mangili.

Much of the air in passenger cabins of commercial aircraft is recirculated, usually through a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter so that any dust, vapors, bacteria, fungi or viral particles can be removed. However, even though most air carriers use them, HEPA filters are not required by the Civil Aviation Authority or the Federal Aviation Administration, the report indicates.

Researchers have not yet determined the risk of disease transmission inside an aircraft. Yet available data, most of which is associated with the in-flight transmission of tuberculosis, suggest that passengers seated within two rows of an affected individual on a flight that lasts more than eight hours have the greatest risk of infection.

At least one exception has been found however, when during an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), passengers who sat seven rows away were also affected.

"As the first severe contagious disease of the 21st century, SARS exemplifies the ever-present threat of new infectious diseases and the real potential for rapid spread made possible by the volume and speed of air travel," the researchers note.

Cabin ventilation may also affect the risk of disease transmission within an aircraft, the report indicates. One exchange of air is known to remove nearly two-thirds of airborne organisms and air is normally exchanged up to 20 times every 60 minutes in airline cabins. In contrast, typical office buildings have only 12 air changes during the same amount of time, the researchers note.

Results from tuberculosis-associated mathematical modeling experiments show that the risk of infection can be reduced by half by simply doubling the rate of ventilation within an aircraft cabin. What's more, that increased ventilation was shown to nearly eliminate the infection risk of passengers seated 15 seats away from an affected individual.

"Clearly ventilation provides a crucial determinant of risk, and efforts to increase ventilation will reduce risk," Gendreau and Mangili write.

Overall, the actual risk of infection is less than the perceived risk, Gendreau noted, but travelers should help protect themselves and their fellow passengers by refraining from traveling while sick. They should also follow basic precautions like washing their hands and using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer before eating and after using the bathroom, he said.

Gendreau and Mangili's review is based on a compilation of findings from previously published studies as well as information obtained from international air carriers and medical representatives from the Civil Air Authority and the Federal Aviation Administration.

King's breakthrough ISLET transplantation to help diabetes sufferers
09 March 2005

New breakthrough means insulin dependence could be a thing of the past for diabetes sufferers

A multidisciplinary team at King’s College Hospital has successfully achieved islet cell¹ transplantation in a Type 1² diabetes patient. This breakthrough has major implications for diabetes sufferers and has never before been achieved in the United Kingdom. The patient, a 61 year old man, now no longer needs insulin injections, following three transplants of islet cells isolated from cadaveric donor pancreases.

Historically, islet transplants have only been partially successful, in that they have reduced the amount of insulin required, but the need for regular injections still remained. The first reports of insulin independence came recently from a programme in Canada. The King’s programme is the first to report a comparable result for the UK. This patient has proved that it is possible for islet transplants to lead to freedom from administered insulin and diabetes treatment associated problems.

The patient suffered from Type 1 diabetes for over 30 years, experiencing increasing problems with his diabetes therapy. Prior to the islet transplant he endured severe, potentially life threatening hypoglycaemic³ attacks, which profoundly affected his quality of life. Following the islet transplant he is now producing his own insulin and is completely free from hypoglycaemia.

The King’s team, a collaboration between the Department of Diabetes and the Liver Unit’s transplantation team, has to date transplanted three Type 1 diabetes patients with pancreatic islet cells. The first two patients achieved partial success, achieving relief of hypoglycaemia problems, but still requiring small doses of insulin.

Islet cells are obtained from donor pancreases and are transplanted by injection, into the liver of the recipient. Once in the liver, the cells develop their own blood supply and begin producing insulin. This procedure is minimally invasive and only takes around 45 minutes to complete.

There are around 250,000 people in the UK currently suffering from Type 1 diabetes. The patients live with the constant need to be aware of their blood glucose levels and the threat of long term complications such as blindness, renal failure, amputation and cardiovascular disease. Hypoglycaemia is also an ever-present threat. Hypoglycaemia can vary from being mildly uncomfortable to life threatening. People with Type 1 diabetes often live extremely regimented lives, requiring self blood testing four times or more times per day, injecting insulin five times per day and constantly being aware of the food they eat, level of exercise and levels of alcohol consumption.

Professor Stephanie Amiel, Consultant in Diabetes commented: “This breakthough is hugely exciting. The implications for the future are enormous. Eventually, this could mean the end of insulin dependence for all Type 1 diabetes sufferers. In its current state of technology though, islet transplantation is not perfect. We do not have enough organ donors, therefore we cannot extract enough islets to help all Type 1 patients. More research needs to be done to perfect the islet isolation procedures and the drugs we use to prevent rejection of the islets and recurrence of the diabetes. At present we can therefore only offer this treatment to patients, in whom conventional treatments are failing in a major way. However, it is our aim that ultimately all people with Type 1 diabetes would become eligible for islet transplantation and free from insulin dependence.”

Mr Nigel Heaton, Consultant Liver Surgeon, commented: “This breakthrough in islet transplantation is remarkable. King’s is the first centre in the UK to achieve insulin independence in Type 1 patients. The research approach at King’s is totally multidisciplinary, with experts across specialities in diabetes, liver transplantation, cell isolation and radiology all working together.

“The result of this work will have far reaching implications, not only for Type 1 diabetes patients, but also in the wider area of cell research. We have shown that cell transplantation, with both pancreatic islet cells and previously with hepatocyte cells, can offer patients a valuable alternative to conventional treatments.”

The islet cell research has been funded by King’s College Hospital Charitable Trust and Dixons Charitable Foundation. The clinical costs are supported by Diabetes UK.

Information for patients

The islet transplantation team at King’s College Hospital has an active islet transplantation programme

This is still an experimental procedure for people with Type 1 diabetes in which pancreatic islets from human donor organs are infused into the body to try and replace some of the islet function which the patient has lost. In order to prevent rejection of the islet graft and recurrence of the diabetes, the recipient is committed to taking drugs that suppress the body’s immune system.

Islet transplantation is not yet a perfect procedure and cannot guarentee insulin independence. It can however stop recurrent severe hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) in insulin treated patients, reduce their insulin requirements and give much better glucose control, as long as the islets survive.

You may be suitable for islet transplantation IF:

* You have Type 1 (juvenile onset, insulin dependent) diabetes and
* You are aged between 18 and 65 and
* You are using multiple daily insulin injection therapy (> 3 injections per day) and
* You are experiencing problems with SEVERE HYPOGLYCAEMIA - episodes of low blood glucose you cannot treat yourself and
* You are requiring no more than 0.7 units of insulin per kg body weight to maintain a reasonably good average blood glucose and

Doctors Cure Man Of Diabetes

March 10, 2005

Doctors at King's College Hospital, London, have successfully cured a man of Type 1 diabetes by injecting pancreatic cells into his liver.

The patient, a 61 year old man, now no longer needs insulin injections, following three transplants of islet cells isolated from cadaveric donor pancreases. This breakthrough has major implications for diabetes sufferers and has never before been achieved in the United Kingdom.

This patient has proved that it is possible for islet transplants to lead to freedom from administered insulin and diabetes treatment associated problems.

The patient suffered from Type 1 diabetes for over 30 years, experiencing increasing problems with his diabetes therapy. Prior to the islet transplant he endured severe, potentially life threatening hypoglycaemic attacks, which profoundly affected his quality of life.

A Hearty Laugh Helps Keep a Healthy Heart - Elites TV - Your Elite News Source

This is a very interesting report!! When I was teen till 40, my mom always said I am too serious in my life. never laugh. I may die of heart illness.

This reconfirmed the Guru like Buddha, Lao Tze saying of a person must use laughing to relax him/herself.

Without these scientifically prove study, people would say I just blindly belief in these Guru said.

A Hearty Laugh Helps Keep a Healthy Heart

A new study suggests that laughter actually does help keep your heart healthier by relaxing your blood vessels increasing blood flow through your body.

The study was presented at the American College of Cardiology and conducted by Michael Miller of the University of Maryland Medical Center. 20 volunteers were involved in the study. They were tested for blood pressure, cholesterol, blood-sugar levels and how their blood vessels reacted to stress and humor.

The volunteers were shown scenes from two different movies to cause stress and laughter. First, they watched the opening few minutes of Steven Spielberg's World War II epic 'Saving Private Ryan' with its bloody battle sequences. Then, for laughter, the subjects viewed a scene from the Farrelly brothers comedy 'Kingpin.'

After measuring 160 blood vessels, it was found that laughing relaxed blood vessels in 19 of the 20 volunteers in the study. Miller believes that the reaction is caused by nitric oxide which causes blood vessels to relax.

'The magnitude of change we saw is similar to the benefit we might see with aerobic activity, but without the aches, pains and muscle tension associated with exercise,' Miller said. 'When you laugh, you have less wear on your joints, and you don't have to worry about calories from chocolate. A good belly laugh a day would be a big step toward heart health.'

Miller said he hopes to replicate the study with more volunteers and over a two-to-five year period.

If the results of the study hold up, don't be surprised if your doctor tells you someday to watch two comedies and call him in the morning.

Milk isn't what makes bones strong

This is a very interesting report that Published in March Issue of The Journal Pediatrics.

No wonder, the Chinese History on acquiring wellness of bone & calcium are more relying on none soup, beans, brown or red rice.

Milk isn't what makes bones strong - (United Press International): "Milk isn't what makes bones strong

WASHINGTON, DC, Mar. 8 (UPI) -- Milk and dairy products do not promote healthy bones in kids and young adults, a Washington-based research group found after analyzing 58 studies.
Adblock

The review was prompted by a 'calcium paradox,' the researchers said. Though Americans are some of the world's highest consumers of dairy products, U.S. rates of osteoporosis and bone fracture also are among the world's highest.

The non-profit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine reported there is little connection between calcium and bone health and 'scant' evidence backing current U.S. recommendations on the intake of dairy products.

'A clear majority of the studies we examined for this review found no relationship between dairy or dietary calcium intake and measures of bone health. In the remaining reports, the evidence was sketchy,' wrote Amy Joy Lanou, lead author.

Some studies showed a small impact on bone health but, in some cases, those conclusions were confounded by use of milk fortified with vitamin D, which also is important for strong bones.

The study appears in the March issue of the journal Pediatrics."

Getting under your skin?
By Shereen Low, The Journal

Beauty, Skin

Few of us are content with our complexions - how often have you stood in front of the mirror, focusing on your flaws, staring at any wrinkles, lines and saggy skin?

Not only do we start worrying about how old we look, and how youthful we'd like our skin to be, but we're also willing to spend money on products promising to turn back the years.

But according to Dr Nick Lowe, consultant dermatologist and author of Away With Wrinkles, expensive products just aren't always worth it.

"More expensive does not necessarily mean more effective. A great variety of creams can be found containing just about anything and costing a fortune to buy."

Instead, he suggests finding a cream that includes humectants such as glycerine or sodium hydronate, antioxidant mixtures like vitamin E or vitamin C, and low levels of retinoids such as retinol, retinaldehyde and vitamin A. Likewise, moisturisers with the right concentration of fruit acids can also help.

"The best time to apply a rejuvenating cream is at night, so it doesn't mix with day protection," he adds. "As for the serum and cream debate, whichever one you choose will depend on your preference.

"When you're choosing a moisturiser, beware of exotic-sounding names - check the ingredients and insist on testing it on your skin."

And if you can't decide, he suggests visiting a dermatologist. "If you have sensitive skin, skin problems like eczema, or sun damage, see a dermatologist, who will be able to give you impartial and sensible advice on what to use."

You should also start protecting your skin as early as possible, to reduce the risk of skin cancer and ageing, he stresses.

"If you have been exposed to the sun, you've used tanning beds irresponsibly, or you smoke, you may see accelerated signs of ageing. As soon as you see those early signs, you should start using creams or procedures, if that's what is needed.

"The treatments you choose to have will depend on how aggressive those signs are on your skin, and also how it impacts on your life. Chemical peels, microdermabrasion and fillers like Botox can look natural and not grotesque."

If you have your heart set on cosmetic surgery, Nick has some tips. "If you're considering surgery, go and see a trained specialist and don't get hoodwinked into advertising claims.

"Find out about the different skin-rejuvenating procedures, and don't get pushed or rushed into anything. Cosmetic surgery is not an emergency, so take the time to do your homework - arm yourself with knowledge.

"Ask if the specialist will do the treatment themselves - Botox and filler injections should never be delegated."

WHAT REALLY WORKS

It may sound like a cliche, but giving up smoking, wearing sunscreen, drinking plenty of water and reducing your alcohol and caffeine intake really do help.

Eating nutrient-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, grains and beans are natural antioxidants, and exercising will improve blood flow and oxygen delivery to the skin - both can lead to younger-looking, healthier and more radiant skin.

Nick also bursts the myth about facial exercises, saying: "The commonly-held belief that facial muscles should be toned and exercised in order to delay ageing of the face is nothing more than a beauty-industry and media-hyped myth.

"For most of the face, the reverse is true, and exercising the muscles of the upper face by increasing muscle action in that area can lead to a significantly increased number of lines around the eyes, forehead and mouth." Read More.....

Sen. Smith dedicates new wellness library named for his son -- Meditations!!

With the present living enviroment, stress is the key to kids life.. both parents & kids are under ever increase stress.

Then the depression kicks in. I have observe that in countries like Singapore, Japan, UK, Hong Kong.. all having the same issues.

My recommendations is that teach Kids how to meditate to heal themself for their wellness.

Sen. Smith dedicates new wellness library named for his son

PENDLETON— Sen. Gordon Smith came home Friday to dedicate a wellness library named after his deceased son at St. Anthony Hospital, in hopes the library can help others who struggle with depression.

Smith, a Republican from Pendleton, created the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Fund soon after his son Garrett committed suicide on Sept. 8, 2003, after battling bi-polar disorder and the depression that stemmed from it. That fund helped to generate enough money to establish the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Library at the hospital.

“We’re profoundly grateful for this place of healing,” Smith told an invitation-only crowd of nearly 200 at the hospital Friday morning. “This is the very place where my own mother brought me into the is world, so it’s good to be back.”

The library houses numerous books and Internet-capable computers for patients and community members to use in order to gain knowledge about depression and other mental health issues, as well as to provide assistance to young people battling depression.

A wall outside the library showcases Garrett Smith’s life in large, colorful photos, along with a message from the Smith family. Sen. Smith, his wife Sharon and his daughter Brittany unveiled the wall following the library dedication.

“Today, with the Smith family, we have the opportunity to shed a ray of light of hope on those struggling with depression,” said Kevin Hale, chairman of the St. Anthony Hospital Foundation Board.

As Smith began his dedication remarks, he warned the crowd, “I will try to keep my eyes dry today so I can share the thoughts in my heart, but if I don’t succeed, they are tears of joy.”

The tears did come as Smith told of President Abraham Lincoln’s struggle with his own son’s death to typhoid fever, and how he locked himself in his room for 14 days following the funeral, troubled with the thought of moving on without his son.

“After Garrett’s death, I began to figure out how to go on,” Smith said. “I contemplated returning to Pendleton and focusing on my two other children, but that wouldn’t have been keeping on with the people of Oregon.

“But I found comfort in a cause,” Smith continued. “This is very important because every year in America 1,700 high schoolers take their lives, and in American colleges, 3,000 take their lives.”

Following the death of his son, Sen. Smith championed the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act, which President Bush signed Sept. 9, 2004, a year and a day after Garrett’s suicide, It would have been his 23rd birthday. The act sets aside $82 million over three years for youth suicide prevention and intervention programs.

Vitamin E supplements effective in raising skin antioxidant levels - Carotanoids??

It have been proved again & again that Vitamin E would help. But beside Vitamin E, Vitamin C is important as well.

Anti-Oxidants can be from fruits & Vegetable.. Carot too. Caroteniods is the Anti-Oxidants that combate the free radicals in the body.. scientific study found that if the Caroteniods of a person fall below certain level then that person would have low immunity. & would be prompted to illness.

I would write more about it later. Now let's back to the Skin Care.. Anti-oxidants..

The basic technigue is still as follow:

Drink Enough Filtered Water

Don't over expose to the sun light

Drink Fruits Juice

Have enough Rest & Sleep

Don't eat deep fried & oilly Fatty food

No Alcohol

No Spicies food & Curry

No Smoking

No Late night

Eat Steam Food & Vege

Drink more Bone soup with Pig skin collagen

Then you shall have the Great health of your Skin.. Look young .. & be young....

Vitamin E supplements effective in raising skin antioxidant levels

24/02/2005 - Supplements of either natural or synthetic source vitamin E almost double the levels of this important antioxidant on the skin’s surface, report researchers this month, providing the first strong evidence for the role of vitamin E supplements in skincare, writes Dominique Patton.

Vitamin E has long been used in cosmetic applications to help the skin combat oxidative stress from the environment that lead to damage and ageing.

However although some vitamin E supplements have been positioned for beauty and skin health, scientific data to support their benefit has been lacking.

The new study, funded by vitamin maker BASF and first reported at a major conference on vitamin E last year, reveals for the first time a potential delivery mechanism for dietary vitamin E reaching the skin via sebaceous gland secretion.

It will open up new opportunities for supplement makers to tap the lucrative skincare market, currently seeing significantly stronger growth than the traditional vitamins sector.

“Most vitamin E supplements are just marketed as regular vitamin E but consumer awareness of the idea that nutrition can influence beauty is growing. Now we can offer customers scientific support for this concept,” Simon Gauch, global product manager for fat-soluble vitamins at BASF, told NutraIngredients.com.

Skincare markets in Europe have seen growth above 20 per cent in recent years. France, which has some 40 per cent of the western European skincare market and sales of €2.2 billion in 2004, is expected to grow by 17 per cent over the next five years, according to Mintel, while less developed markets such as Italy will grow faster at 26 per cent over 2004 figures.

The UK market is also going to perform particularly well over this period, growing some 24 per cent to almost €1 billion, according to the market research firm.

“Consumer interest in beauty is often stronger than their interest in health,” noted Gauch, adding that BASF are the first to study vitamin E’s potential in this field.

Researchers led by Professor Jens Thiele at the Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago had previously shown that sebum contains the highest concentrations of alpha-tocopherol found in human skin and accounts for the high levels of vitamin E found in the outermost layers of the skin and in skin surface lipids.

They hypothesized that take-up of oral vitamin E in the skin is largely dependent on sebaceous gland secretion.

The theory was tested on 24 healthy volunteers, randomized to receive a daily supplement of either 400 mg synthetic alpha-tocopherol or natural source alpha-tocopherol for two weeks.

Fasting blood samples, facial sebum samples, and skin surface lipid extractions from a site with low density of sebaceous glands (the forearm) were taken between baseline and 21 days.

Serum alpha-tocopherol levels were significantly increased as early as 12 hours after the first supplements were taken, peaking on day seven, with an average increase of 76 per cent and 79 per cent, respectively.

Sebum levels remained unchanged during the first 14 days of supplementation but after two weeks, both vitamin E groups saw alpha-tocopherol levels in sebum increase by 87 per cent and 92 per cent, respectively.

No significant changes were observed in lower arm skin surface lipids at any time point.

“The results suggest that sebaceous gland secretion is a major mechanism leading to site-specific differences,” write the researchers in a special issue of the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences (2004; 1031: 184).

They note that the bioavailability of both vitamin types is comparable but that possible protective effects in the skin will not be achieved before a supplementation period of two to three weeks.

“In view of the recently identified susceptibility of sebaceous lipids to solar photo-oxidation, dietary vitamin E supplementation may help to protect human skin barrier lipids from environmental oxidative stress,” conclude the authors.

Further studies should compare test sites with different density and activity of sebaceous glands, they said, but added that other pathways of vitamin E delivery to the skin should not be ruled out.

The findings will also give vitamin makers new potential to grow the vitamin E market. The leading suppliers of synthetic vitamin E, BASF and DSM, have both expanded capacity recently, to a combined 45,000 tons, and need to grow the market.

While animal nutrition accounts for the biggest share of demand for this vitamin, both firms will be keen to push vitamin E products to higher value segments such as human nutrition and cosmetics, or indeed, the crossover -and least developed - area of cosmeceuticals.

The findings were presented by Dr Swarna Ekanayake Mudiyanselage from Friedrich Schiller University in Germany at the Vitamin E and Health conference organized by the New York Academy of Sciences in May last year.

Beware!! Using Fruits & Vege for Skin Care --

What this article said is using Fruits or Melon's for skin Care is cheap & effective.

However, one must beware that Are you of Skin Allergies.

In my research into these, I found that like the case below, she is using 2 whole cucumbers for her face..

The other was using the Aloe for her face. Both have been ignorance of the applications.

In the 1st case the cucumber should be cut it to thin slices, 1/2 of it is enough for the whole face. Also a 215 minutes should be more than sufficient for the applications.

The Aloe case is again is over dose, it should be cut to small slices & applied on the face to a very fine coating of Aloe Juice. 15 minutes is more than enough for the applications.

So, learn from the mistake. Know your skin type. before you apply any thing on your face.

A local doctor's perspective on skin-care products

Dr Lisa given the advise that "Best Way To Take Care of The Skin is to protect from the Sun and don't smoke.

A local doctor's perspective on skin-care products
February 22, 2005 By Katy Buchanan, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Dr. Lisa Pawelski, a dermatologist in private practice in Wilkins, said part of the problem for doctors in deciding which products to sell from the office is that there's very little data comparing product to product.

"In my mind, for equivalent quality of product, the more expensive lines might cost four to six times as much as the least expensive doctor-office product line," she said.

As an example, Pawelski pointed out that a 2.5-ounce bottle of an 8 percent glycolic acid cream can cost less than $20, compared with Prevage, which is $115 an ounce. Glycolic acid thins the dead layer of skin cells on the skin surface, thickens the top live layer of cells and helps minimize damage such as liver spots and fine wrinkling.

"You might say you're comparing glycolic acid to antioxidants [i.e. Prevage], but they're all anti-aging things one way or another," she said.

Pawelski carries a less expensive line of skin-care products called DCL in her own office.

"There are certainly physicians who push the products a lot harder and that's a larger part of their profit stream," she said.

As a bottom line, she pointed out, the best way to take care of your skin probably isn't in a tube or a jar.

That is, protect your skin from the sun and don't smoke.

"Sometimes healthy lifestyle adjustments may accomplish as much benefit as an expensive, hyped product."

Slimming -- Bitter Melon -

My research is both on "i-Medicine Sutra" & experiences.

I don't really encourage using of Bitter Melon for Slimming alone.

Bitter Taste is good for the Heart but too much is bad for the Neuro system of our body.

As the characteristic is "Cold", if you have the blood cirulations problem & yet you still use eat too much Bitter melon then your blood circulations would be even worst.

Drinking of Bitter Melon juice would cause stomarch upset.. Once ever 2 weeks if you want to Drink it for clearing your stomarch & intestine that is OK.

So please take note of these for your beautiful Skin & Wellness.

Facial Vein Laser Treatment Cosemtic Dermatology -- Check Your Blood Sugar 1st

Spider Veins On the Face obviously is not so present.

Thanks is due to the Laser Technology that can be used to cure these defects.

When I was in Malaysia, I have a few friends, they have been having the Spider Veins on their face & nose. They have went for the Laser treatment, & it was heal. But later the spider vein seem to be re-surfaced.

I then advised them to go for the check up on their blood. The result found that they have diabetic.

With these experiences, I want to advise you that if you are going to do the Laser Treatment, why not check your blood 1st.

Go to the root before you get treatment.

Facial Vein Laser Treatment Cosemtic Dermatology: "Facial Vein Laser Treatment

Facial vein laser treatments are used to eliminate small, red-to-purple spider veins that appear on the face. Also known as telangiestasias, spider veins can be caused by rosacea, hormones, oral contraceptives, sun exposure or the aging process.

Procedure:
Lasers provide a safe and effective method for eliminating facial spider veins. A laser generating an intense beam of light is directed at the targeted vein using a special laser hand-piece. The energy emitted by the laser is absorbed by the blood vessel, but not by the surrounding tissue. The heat generated by the laser causes coagulation of the blood vessel, which is destroyed and is gradually reabsorbed by the body.

Treatment Duration:
Treatment generally takes just a few minutes; however, the time varies according to the number of vessels requiring treatment. Depending on the type of vessels involved (darker or purple veins are more difficult to remove than pink or red ones), multiple sessions may be necessary to achieve optimal results. Repeat treatments are spaced at four- to six-week intervals.

Anesthesia:
The sensation of laser treatment is like that of a rubber band being snapped against the skin. Some patients opt for application of a topical anesthetic cream prior to the procedure.

After Care:
Discomfort after the procedure is minimal. Some swelling, redness or (rarely) blistering may occur around the treated areas, and the skin may feel tender for several days. In order to maintain optimal results, it is important to apply sunscreen regularly and avoid prolonged sun exposure. "

Dry Skin, Allergy or Something More Serious? Check Your Lung & Intestine!!

Yesterday, I reported about Psoriasis & Skin Care.

I found the following article from WTNH.com.

As according to Psoriasis Foundation, it reconfirmed my research that Stress , diet or allergies.. do triggers the Psorasis.

The healing cream normally for Psorasis is Coal Tar & Serlicerlic Acid 2%.

However, my advise is if you have skin problem , consult a skin specialist 1st.

According to "I-medicine Sutra" Lung, Big Intestine is the roots of the skin, so need to check your Lung & Big Intestine as well.

Dry Skin, Allergy or Something More Serious?

(HealthDay News) -- The cold winter months cause many of us to itch and scratch what appears to be dry skin. But is it weather-related, an allergic reaction, or something more serious like psoriasis?

Psoriasis typically develops between the ages of 15 to 35, but it can begin at any age. Many first-time psoriasis patients may brush off a warning sign and not realize they have a condition that requires medical attention. Check with your doctor if you have:

* Skin with red patches or scales.
* Changes or discoloration of nail beds.
* Red, tender, blistered skin.
* Inflamed or red areas in folds of the skin.

According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, in addition to weather, diet, or allergies, triggers of the disease can include emotional stress, injury to the skin, some types of infection, and reactions to certain drugs. Also, stress can cause psoriasis to flare for the first time or aggravate existing cases.

DNA chart may give clue to the origins of diseasesn - Look at Psorasis

In my previous article I have briefly mentioned that certain kind of skin disease will passed on by generation i.e. psoriasis & eczema.

One thing I don't understand is that the psoriasis normally happen in an interval of generation gap. my research have found that sometime the Grand pa generation have psoraisis then the father & uncle generation would not be having it. Then the son or daugther generation , one of the member would have the disease.

But these is for sure is of the DNA & the gene that come to effect.

Those who have the Psorasis must avoid to have stress,

Not to Drink Beer or Alcohol,

Not to eat too much Prawn

Not to eat Crab, So as to prevent the disease to turn bad.

DNA chart may give clue to the origins of diseases
By Mark Henderson
A GENETIC map that charts the way DNA varies across three racial groups will illuminate the origins of health problems as diverse as heart disease and mental illness, scientists said yesterday.

The completion of the mapping project by Perlegen Sciences, a company based in California, will help researchers to pinpoint genetic variants that contribute to disease and promises to lead to more effective, tailor-made medical treatments.

The study, published yesterday in Science and also presented to the meeting, is the first of its kind to be made public.

It has identified 1.58 million changes in single “letters” of DNA among 71 individuals of Caucasian, African-American and Chinese-American backgrounds.

Analysis of these variants, known as single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs (pronounced “snips”), will enable scientists to identify patterns that work together to trigger illness, or which affect how individual patients are likely to respond to particular drugs.

While 99.99 per cent of the human genome is shared by all people, millions of mutations in single DNA letters have accumulated during our evolution. Some of these SNPs occur in patterns particular to certain populations that share common recent ancestry; others are peculiar to individuals. They account for some of the differences between both people and ethnic groups, affecting traits as diverse as blood pressure and eye colour.

Geneticists believe that mapping and understanding SNPs will be critical to harnessing the medical benefits of the Human Genome Project.

Donald Kennedy, the editor-in-chief of Science, said: “This will provide an invaluable resource for genetic research to improve human health.”

FDA panel recommends 'black box' warnings for eczema creams

From my research into eczema, it is a rather complex or the cause of it.

According to the "I-Medicine Sutra" Skin disease is closely related to the health of Lung & Large Intestine & Colon.

The abstract element of Lung; Large Intestine & Colon is Metal. It is the imbalance of "Chi" or conflicts between "Metal" & "Wood" that caused the Skin Disease.

Eczema can be due to the environment pollutions, humilities, the type of food such as prawn, crabs or certainly fish, also some people may be sensitive to alcohol. There is a possibility that the DNA of the of person & their family DNA. The other factor is Stress.

Using of drug must be very careful, such as using steriod & order toxine cream for the skin.

Sea water or hot spring may be a better alternative to heal the eczema.

FDA panel recommends 'black box' warnings for eczema creams
By Donna Leinwand, USA TODAY
ROCKVILLE, Md. — Two popular medicines used to treat eczema should carry a warning about a potential risk for cancer and infection, a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommended Tuesday.

The medicines, Elidel and Protopic, were approved originally as second-line treatments for eczema, a skin disorder, to be used when traditional treatment with steroid creams did not work or caused a reaction. But both creams have become popular with parents who believe they are safer than steroid creams.

POSSIBLE RISKS

The Food and Drug Administration is looking into reports that lymph node cancer and other cancers have occurred in children and adults using Elidel and Protopic.

What they treat:
Elidel is for mild to moderate atopic dermatitis, a form of eczema. Protopic is for moderate to severe atopic dermatitis. Neither drug is recommended as a first-line treatment.

Who should not use them:
Among those are children younger than 2 years old, women who are breastfeeding, or anyone whose eczema is infected.
What are the risks?
Lymph node cancer, skin cancer (limit exposure to natural or artificial sunlight), increased chance of chickenpox or shingles.
Source: FDA

One of the creams, Elidel, is advertised often on television and in women's magazines as a safe alternative to steroid creams.

FDA officials said at a hearing Tuesday that they were highly concerned that several animals, including primates, developed cancer in studies of the drugs.

An advisory panel of pediatricians, dermatologists, consumer advocates and other scientists concluded Tuesday that the drug labels should include "black box" warnings about the potential cancer risk and the danger of prescribing the creams for children younger than 2.

"Black boxes" — literally printed black boxes enclosing the warnings — are considered the strongest possible labeling. The FDA usually heeds the advice of its professional panels.

"There are animal models that make us concerned that these products could contribute to an increase in cancer," said Dianne Murphy, director of the Office of Pediatric Therapeutics for the FDA. "We have no human proof, but the monkey data was very concerning."

Murphy calls the potential for cancer "biologically plausible."

"We don't want to scare people," Murphy said. "We just want to make people more informed."

Novartis, the manufacturer of Elidel, said in a statement issued after the hearing that the black box warning was "unwarranted and not substantiated by clinical evidence." About 5 million people worldwide are using the drug, Novartis said.

The FDA raised the issue of a potential cancer risk at a hearing in 2003 when early animal studies showed some signs of cancer.

Several members of the panel said then that they were alarmed by the study and wanted more direct warnings on the label. But the panel stopped short of voting for a black-box warning.

Use of the medicines has increased more than fourfold over the past four years, FDA documents show.

Physicians wrote almost 2 million prescriptions for children between June 2003 and May 2004, the FDA said. Doctors also prescribed the creams for about 500,000 children younger than 2. The creams are not recommended for infants.
